Androgen (testosterone) blocking medicines can work in three ways:
- Reduce the production of testosterone in the body
- Stop testosterone having an effect on the body
- Reduce male features of the body
The commonly used anti-androgens are:
Finasteride - a very safe and simple tablet that works well in the majority of cases. This is the one we usually start with before moving on to stronger ones if needed.
Spironolactone - a water tablet used to treat heart failure which is also known to reduce testosterone.
Blockers - these puberty blockers (GnRH analogues) suppress testosterone production completely, but are given by injection or nasal spray and are much more expensive.
